Our shared story
Long before Dumingag became a municipality, the area was a landscape of forests, wetlands, and abundant wildlife. The municipality's official history identifies Subanen communities as its earliest inhabitants, with settlement in the area dating to the latter part of the eighteenth century. Families from neighboring parts of Misamis and Zamboanga del Sur, followed later by migrants from the Visayas, also made their homes in the fertile plains.
The origin of the name “Dumingag” is not considered certain. One account recorded by the municipality connects it with “Duminag,” described as a Subanen word meaning “won.” The same official history presents this as an oral account rather than a conclusively established origin.
As farming settlements grew, residents established a “tabo-an,” or local trading center. This commercial gathering place became the foundation of the poblacion. Around 1950, the community became a barrio of Molave known as Guitran, with Jose Montuerto serving as its first barrio lieutenant.
On December 27, 1957, President Carlos P. Garcia signed Executive Order No. 283 creating the Municipality of Dumingag in the Province of Zamboanga del Sur. Isidoro Y. Real Sr. was appointed as the municipality's first mayor. This legal creation marked the beginning of Dumingag's municipal government and continues to anchor its civic identity today.
